Guildford Borough Commuting

Road ~  concentrating on A3 junctions

You can expect serious traffic congestion during most rush hours in and around Guildford Town Centre and in particular in the area of Ladymead and close to the A3, it is easily understood as most routes of road and rail converge at the town.  Otherwise much of the Guildford Borough is relatively free from road delays owing to the moderate population in the wider area.  However, villages on main roads such as Gomshall, West Clandon and  East Horsley will suffer from a noticeable increase in traffic during rush hours. Ash (on the outskirts of Aldershot) is also a busy area with three train stations in close proximity. To help you,  the table below shows the access and egress routes from the A3 in Guildford Borough,  to complicate matters further staggered junctions are located at several of the locations:

Rail ~ north/south and east/west choice
Key:
Train lines shown as a black line with red squares as stations.
As can be seen from the map above Guildford is well served by the rail network.   The east/west Reading to Gatwick line crosses through the centre of the area converging at Guildford with the north/south London Waterloo line. Visit www.railtrack.co.uk for further information.  Most stations have car parks adjacent to them, but these can fill quickly and are generally expensive.   Effingham Junction (the station located close to Ockham on the map) is a particular favourite with commuters as it offers excellent connections to London Waterloo without the need for travelling into town.  The station car park however has a history of car thefts so be particularly careful not to leave car radios or other items of temptation on display.

Air ~ both London airports nearby
Guildford has easy road access to both London Heathrow and Gatwick airports with the use of the A3 and then the motorway network starting at the M25 junction at Wisley.  Both airports can be reached within one hour by road giving access to the two busiest international airports in the world. See www.heathrow.co.uk and www.gatwickairport.co.uk .
