Guildford Town & suburbs ~ incl. state secondary schools

Location for a home ~ Comment: Highly Recommended, south of the A3 is generally more sought after.  Homes on the outskirts of town especially around Pewley Down, Merrow Downs, The Chantries and The Hogs Back are often favoured and fetch high prices.

Watch out warnings:  A busy county town with a high level of general activity in most of the area.

Guildford Cathedral

uildford is located approximately thirty miles from central London with an excellent choice of fast communication routes into the capital by rail (Waterloo) or road (A3).

This county town really does live up to its name as a 'flag ship' for Surrey.   The town centre is full of life with shops of every description catering for every need.

As a regional shopping centre Guildford receives some 250,000 visitors every week.  Tourism is also a significant factor as Guildford town has a wealth of history  with many fine buildings to visit.

With this amount of activity parking can be a problem and the council is continually trying to update its facilities. The choice of out-of-town park and ride schemes are in operation - watch out for the signs.

The Downs to the east of town

Guildford is blessed with a stunning location and it is particularly famous for its cobbled high street, quite unlike any other locally.    The view from the brow of the high street to the west stretches above the steep drop across the Wey river below, past the church and high up to the facing hillside. On this west side of town is the University of Surrey, the Royal Surrey County Hospital, the renowned Research Park and Cathedral.  After dark, the Cathedrals' spot lights illuminate the tower  which particularly catches. Onslow Village sits high up on the fringes of this side of town, but traffic noise from the A3 becomes very apparent here especially as the main roads converge towards the Hogs BackChantry View Road and its environs is quite lovely set on the south facing hillside near the Chantries woods and the roads leading out towards Merrow and Burpham also boast very desirable homes.  Many of these families will take advantage of the excellent schools nearby, both in the independent and state sector.

Guildford and the wider area increases its advantages with a very good choice of schools in the independent and state sector (the map above shows the general location of secondary schools in the state sector).  In and out of town businesses flourish, in a varied selection of locations meeting most commercial needs.  Homes of various styles and size appeal to most tastes.  So the stage is set for Guildford's popularity to continue to grow by offering great facilities for its residents, businesses and visitors alike.
