The
Street, Shackleford
|
n unspoilt sandstone country west of
Godalming, nestles the charming village of Shackleford. It is a street of picturesque sandstone and
brick houses with the addition of careful early 20th
century planting and
walling so that the village appears to unfold in front of the
onlooker. The
village is traditional and uncontrived, beautiful in its natural
simplicity and in an envious position, so rural and yet so close to
the A3 and Godalming town centre.

St Mary's
Church, Shackleford
|
The narrow
village street winds gently between walled gardens and at a fork in
the road the large open playing fields of Aldro School become
apparent. To the south along first Grenville Road then Shackleford
Road, the traveller will come across
St Mary’s Church by Sir George Gilbert Scott 1865.
The church is a good example of Victorian Gothic style.

Shackleford Village Hall
|
Voysey built
Norney, a
big house nearby, in 1897 using rough-cast and yellow limestone. Over all the village has many attractive houses and some fine architecture.

Aldro School in the centre of the village was built as
mansion in the last century on the site of Hall Place, which William
de Shackleford owned during the reign of Henry VIII. Its
main block dates from around 1900 but it still retains the 18th
century
stables, complete with cupola, that served the previous house on the
site.
