Merrist Wood Agricultural
College and grounds

he widespread parish of Worplesdon, immediately to the north of Guildford, is split into four villages, Fairlands, Jacobs Well, Wood Street and Worplesdon itself.  All have their own identity.

Much of the parish is the wedge between the Boroughs of Guildford and Woking and is a mixture of residential development and open space.  Fairlands, for example is nearly all a housing estate sited in the vicinity of a major roundabout on the A323.  It has a village feel however and a community all of its own. The convenience of Worplesdon Primary School for families is to the south of the estate. Fairlands Farm sits across the road from the main group of residential roads (see photo below).  Adjacent is Roker Park Golf Course and Driving Range.  A little further along the A323 is Fairoaks Caravan Park bordering Littlefield Common, the wider area encompasses a gipsy site along the Aldershot Road.

Fairlands local countryside and farmland

To the north side of Fairlands is the well known Merrist Wood College which is situated on its own estate.  This immediate area includes the agricultural college, a farm, equestrian centre and golf course, it is entered through a lodge house entrance just off Holly Lane.   The wider surroundings are mostly rough common areas and farm land over a level landscape.

History
Merrist Wood is a house by Norman Shaw built in 1877 on an exquisite site looking south to the Hogs Back. It is now an Agricultural College and one of Norman Shaw’s best houses. The public have limited access to the grounds and during the year there are a number of agricultural demonstrations.
