Well hardly has its own identity now due to the
spread of Guildford town. As an over all
impression it is mostly a enclosed network of roads
lined by small detached houses, many of bungalow style
and forming a series of crescents and cul de
sacs.
In the wider area is Burpham Court Farm (which is
open to the public) bordering the River Wey Navigation
which meanders through the fields on the border with
Woking Borough. A little further down Clay Lane
is a main junction slip road onto the A3 for traffic
wishing to travel north. A tow path runs alongside
the River Wey at Riverside Park, maintained by the
local council. Across the A3 is a Sainsbury's
superstore and just to the south of Jacobs Well is Slyfield
Green with one of the most widely known and largest
industrial estates in the area. Such names as
Vines BMW and Wadham Kenning main dealerships are
located here close to two primary schools.
Also other functional domestic facilities such as a
refuse site and sewage works are in the general area.
To the north of
Jacobs Well is Whitmoor Common, a large rough
common with numerous public paths for recreational
enjoyment.
History
Jacobs Well first appeared on the Worplesdon
title map
in 1839 but no one seems to know why. There are wells
there,
but who was Jacob? It must have been a very different place in
those days with the A3 just a winding road leading down to Guildford High Street and the road
towards a pre-railway Woking would have been little more than a
dusty track. Jacobs Well was distant form both places,
but now it has become part of Guildford's northerly
spread.
