The
Church of St Francis |
he tiny hamlet of
Littleton is something of a surprise in its
overwhelming simplicity and charm even to someone well
used to the attractions of Surrey. This tiny little
backwater seems to have missed any of the spoiling of
recent years. It might even be more
believable in a remote situation, but as it is so very
close to Guildford town centre it is truly
remarkable. It is almost a betrayal to
reveal the secret of this tiny group of church, houses
and farms as it is rare and peaceful, something
endangered with any spread of publicity.
Ideally Littleton should be explored on foot, bicycle or
horseback as the car seems out of place here.

Orange
Court Farm |
The little church of St Francis and its adjacent house sit
snugly together, with Orange Court Farm opposite
balancing the effect.
Walkers can cross
the park onto the Pilgrim’s Way to the west and then emerge into
Compton. The road in and out of Littleton runs as a single
track, keeping it desirably impractical
for frequent use.
Away from the central group, a string of residences
border Sandy Lane after the bend towards the
southern end of Guildford, theirs is an outlook over
countryside. Just to the east of Littleton is the
large complex of Surrey Police Headquarters at
Mount Browne in an area better known as Artington,
which also see the location of Guildford's well known College
of Law.
