The Co-educational
6th
Form at St John's

At St John's
we aim to give our Sixth Formers the best possible
preparation for life beyond school. In addition to
the fine teaching they receive in our academic
departments students are given considerable
support and individual guidance through the
tutorial system.
Additionally and most importantly all students
derive huge benefit from being in a mixed society.
Through academic study, extra curricular
activities and of course, socially, they learn to
live and work together in an atmosphere of mutual
respect thus preparing themselves for life at
university beyond the shelter of home or school.
Students joining the 6th form discover that Sixth
Formers are expected to play a strong and
significant part in all aspects of school life.
Those displaying qualities of service, initiative
and dependability are asked to take on positions
of responsibility as Prefects and some are elected
by their peers to sit on the student council.
Likewise, several are nominated to captain
teams or run clubs and societies.
Academically, Sixth Formers are able to
concentrate on those three or four A level
subjects they have chosen in addition to following
courses from General Studies programme. They are
given weekly assignments in each subject and need
to learn for themselves how best to manage their
time and energy in order to meet their many
commitments.
Away from
their studies, Sixth
Formers are encouraged to develop their skills and
interests through our extensive programme of
sporting, cultural and service activities.
Socially, they have access to the Sixth Form Club
- an especially useful place where boarders from
different houses can meet and relax at the end of
a long and challenging day. However those seeking
greater privacy may prefer to stay in their
studies or house common rooms. Other
parts of the school such as library,
computer
centre, sports
hall, art department and
music
school, are still available for use late into the
evening.
