Sports and Activities at St John's

Whilst our aim for Sixth Formers is to enable them to fulfil their academic potential and gain entry to the university of their choice, the extra-curricular activities programme enables them to gain a wide range of experiences, both formal and informal, offsite and onsite. there are, for example, opportunities for a full involvement in the CCF, Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Choirs, Orchestra, Wind Band, Jazz Band Community Service, Sport Debating and Drama. I addition there are Sixth Form expeditions each year from the artic circle to the Sahara! It is through fulfilling their academic potential whilst, at the same time, participating fully in this programme of activities that our students develop those essential qualities of self-awareness, self-discipline and self-confidence that will be the key to their ultimate success.

Students joining the 6th form discover that Sixth Formers are expected to play a strong and significant part in all aspects of school life. Those displaying qualities of service, initiative and dependability are asked to take on positions of responsibility as Prefects and some are elected by their peers to sit on the student council. Likewise, several are nominated to captain teams or run clubs and societies.
Academically, Sixth Formers are able to concentrate on those three or four A level subjects they have chosen in addition to following courses from General Studies programme. They are given weekly assignments in each subject and need to learn for themselves how best to manage their time and energy in order to meet their many commitments.

Away from their studies, Sixth Formers are encouraged to develop their skills and interests through our extensive programme of sporting, cultural and service activities. Socially, they have access to the Sixth Form Club - an especially useful place where boarders from different houses can meet and relax at the end of a long and challenging day. However those seeking greater privacy may prefer to stay in their studies or house common rooms. Other parts of the school such as library, computer centre, sports hall, art department and music school, are still available for use late into the evening.
