n the slopes above
Holmbury St Mary and Peaslake these
carefully managed forests sweep up to the summit at the site of an
old hill fort, where these days there is an exposed and wonderful
viewing spot of the Weald countryside below.
Wide firebreaks in woodland with pale sandy soil, allow views north
to the North Downs to match those to the south. Wildlife
abounds in every form, plants, birds and animals nurtured in this
safe and supportive environment ~ even the odd snake! A
spot for contemplation, recreation, fresh air and pure
happiness!

There are car parks in the area which allow good access, one
close to the summit on the Radnor Road from Peaslake, one
at the top of Radnor Lane near the Youth Hostel in Sutton
Abinger and one at the top of Felday Glade from the green at
Holmbury St Mary.
The central of three hills in line together with Leith Hill
(to the east and Pitch Hill to the west) cared
for by the Hurtwood Control, magnificent countryside privately owned
but kept open to the public for recreation ~ our inheritance and
such a privilege and joy.

Holmbury
Hill countryside
|
The Hurtwood
covers around 4,000 acres of Forest and Heathland, including
Holmbury and Pitch Hills and parts of Winterfold, Blackheath and
Farley Heath in Surrey. The public have rights of access over this
area and these rights are protected by a voluntary charitable body
known as the Hurtwood Control. A full time ranger is employed and
included amongst his many duties are clearance of Bridleways and
Footpaths, maintenance of viewpoints and car parks, and clearance of
the inevitable litter and rubbish. The cost of maintaining and
protecting this environment on your behalf is increasing annually,
so we appeal to you, who enjoy these amenities, for support.
