Ewhurst
A straggling roadside village running N-S under
the S slopes of the Hurtwood E of Cranleigh.
A pretty small square at the N end of the village, a few
cottages beside the church and Ewhurst Green ½ m further s.
A village of many ordinary bungalows with older style
cottages between the best probably Deblins Green at the N end of the
village opposite the Bulls Head, of the late regularly built
half-timbered house. Lukyns 1 m NE is one of Ernest newton’s
correct, symmetrical Wren-style houses 1911 with Jekyll garden.
The Greensand crest of Pitch Hill stares down the main
street of this Wealden village, straggling from a small
square at the north to a long green on the road south.
The church of Peter and Paul in the centre is built of
sandstone with sturdy Norman-style central tower and broach
spire by Robert Ebbels (1838). The best
village houses are Tudor House, with C15 herring-bone brick
filling between close timber-framing and Old Cottage late
C17 brick and half-timber below and scalloped and straight
tilehanging above. On the wooded slopes to the north
are a number of late Victorian houses, Coneyhurst by P ;Webb
(1886), Woolpit by George and Peto and Long Copse by Alfred
Powell (1897) of stone part Horsham slated, part thatched
with interior woodwork by E. Gimson. Watts the
artist of Compton, thought it the most beautiful house in
the country. It is worth ascending the 843 feet of
Pitch Hill (Coneyhurst) for its views over the village and
the Weald to the South Downs and either side along the
Greensand escarpment.
An attractive village below the Surrey hills with some old
houses, a church with a fine \norman doorway and an unusual village
sign erected to mark the Coronation in 1953. The village is a
good starting point from which to clilmb Pitch Hill 843feet, 1 mile
to the north, or to explore the dense Hurtwood.
The Bulls Head, The Street originally built as a railway hotel but
the line was never extended to Ewhurst! Letting rooms
available in this attractive village at the foot of the Surrey
Hills. Letting Rooms available. Tel: 01483 277447.
