You can expect serious traffic
congestion during most rush hours in and around
Dorking Town Centre and in particular in the
narrow one way system entering Dorking from the A25
from Guildford and Westcott, it is easily
understood as most routes of road and
rail converge at the town. The main A24 which runs
North/South is very busy in the rush hours also. This
causes congestion to traffic leaving Dorking heading to
Rigate for access to the M25 heading East. If you want
to go west then the M25 at Leatherhead (follow the A24
North) is the best route to take. Otherwise much of the
Move valley Borough is relatively free from road delays owing to the moderate
population in the wider area. However, villages on
main roads such as Westcott, Holmwood North
and South, Fetcham and Bookham will suffer from a noticeable
increase in traffic during rush hours as they lie close
to the main road through roads.
Rail ~ north/south
and east/west choice
Key:
Train
lines shown as a black line with
red squares as stations.
As can be
seen from the map above Mole Valley is well served by the
rail network. Dorking has a regular service
to London and also to destinations in the South.
Leatherhead is fortunate because trains from Guildford
and Dorking pass through Leatherhead heading for both
Victoria and Waterloo. Visit www.railtrack.co.uk
for further information. Most stations have car
parks adjacent to them, but these can fill quickly and
are generally expensive.
Air
~ both London airports nearby
Mole Valley has easy access to the M25 and therefore is
in easy reach of Heathrow. An good estimate of average
time from Dorking to Heathrow is 60-90 minutes. Mind you
the M25 is renowned for making airport journey times
much much longer so if you are heading to Heathrow you
would be wise to allow twice that amount. Gatwick
airport is a much more leisurely drive, if you want to
brave the M25 you can head East to Reigate and join the
M23. It is a longer route and will burn more petrol but
it is only one junction on the M25 so that is good. That
said if the level crossing gates are down in Reigate
then that will be an unwelcome delay. Alternatively
heading south on the A217 (out of Reigate) or even
through the country lanes via Charlwood is a pleasant
drive in the Spring, Autumn and Summer months but you
would be wise to avoid this route on icy snowy days as the
roads are not cleared as well as the main roads. Without
traffic delays you can get to Gatwick from Dorking in
about 45-50 minutes but as always allow more time for
unexpected problems.
