To
Rent or Buy? - that is the question
here is no right or wrong answer to this one. It will depend on
your personal circumstances and everyone's are different. It is
widely considered, in this country, that owning your own property is
desirable and the
aim of most people long-term. You may find either option is the
right choice at different times of your life.
Here are a few reminders:
Advantages:
>No tie-up of capital lump sum
>Short-term commitment
>Flexibility to match your lifestyle
>No investment means no risks such as
'negative
equity'
>Interest rate
changes in the way they affect the mortgage rate
will not be a concern for you
Disadvantages:
X Rent
you pay can never be an investment for you, but it will be for your
landlord
X You are at the risk of being served notice to quit when you don't want
to move
X The property is not your own and cannot be treated as such, someone else's permission has to be sought to make even small
changes
X In a buoyant property market you stand to lose out on the potential
investment in your home. It is even possible you may never be able
to make up the difference with house prices rising out of reach
